Breitling SuperOcean A17366 review
Reading Time: 3 minutesShare with you which is this e-commerce exclusive Breitling Super Ocean 42. This watch was only sold online for a very short period and proved to be extremely popular and now is very hard to come by on the pre-owned market. Luckily we managed to get some footage of this watch before it departed, so let’s dive straight in starting with the packaging.
Breitling Super Ocean 42 packaging
As you can see here the watch is contained in the new Breitling Eco packaging, which has been made from upcycled PET bottles and covered externally with a lovely blue woven fabric. Internally, the box is coated with a softer suede material and features an embossed motif on the lid, which also doubles up as a warranty card holder likewise. The watch cushion also has dual functionality as it doubles up as a travel pouch. Clever stuff from Breitling. You can really see how the brand is trying to make a conscious effort to improve their eco initiatives. And this doesn’t go unmissed with the paperwork either as all we have is 1 instruction manual, which is tied in with the warranty card. Very good work here from Breitling.
As for the specs of the watch, it’s an automatic piece that is home to the Chronometer certified calibre B17 movement, which means that the watch is been certified by COSC to comply with their stringent standards. As for the dimensions, the watch is 42 millimetres in diameter with a lug width of 20 millimetres and Thickness of 13.3 millimetres.
Super Ocean 42 dial
Moving on now to the stand out part of the watch, the dial, and straight away we can see what makes this piece stand out from all the other standard 42’s in the SuperOcean line. And that is the bright red chapter ring. I’m so glad that Breitling have done this. It gives me those old school SuperOcean vibes and does a great job of taking the new SuperOcean style and just making it pop. Such a small change, but such a huge difference that it makes. I also like the way in which the red chapter ring ties in nicely with the oversized red tipped seconds hand, and I think that this makes the dial feel a bit more complete overall. As for the main hands. You can see that they are quite chunky, which is great for legibility, and are finished with a matte gun metal effect which makes them stand out from the black dial. This same finish is also found on the indices where we see a lovely set of 3D looking raised oversized Arabic numerals mixed with trapezoidal markers. All of which are coated with a generous helping of lume to help the watch glow in the dark. And to complete the dial we of course have the appearance of the Breitling logo in the top half of the dial, along with the italic SuperOcean wording printed on the bottom half and the quick change date window at the 3:00 position, all of which is topped by a scratch resistant sapphire crystal, that features anti reflective coating on both the underside and top side. This is by far one of the clearest dials that I’ve seen in a long time. The AR coating is so crisp that you don’t even realise there is a crystal on there most of the time.
Breitling Super Ocean bezel
Moving on now to the bezel we can see that we have a very sharp looking bezel that features a black Anodized aluminium insert, sandwiched between 2 polished pieces of steel. Of course this is the diving bezel, so it operates uni directionally and features a generously sized lume pip at the 12:00 position along with a beautifully brushed steel diving scale. As for the outside of the bezel, we can see that it is intricately teethed for easy gripping which also adds to the aesthetic of the piece.
Looking at the case we can see that there is an integrated lug profile on this watch where the top lugs are brushed with a concentric graining accompanied by polished flanks which give the watch a beautiful glint. And on the crown side of the case we have an easy grip screw down crown that is tucked in between a set of twin pointed crown guards and decorated with the Breitling B logo, all of which is presented on a thick vulcanised rubber strap that is surprisingly flexible and comfortable.
Breitling Super Ocean 42 strap
The strap is decorated with the Breitling wording which runs the whole length of the strap and transitions from raised to sunken. And as many of you may have noticed, we have a traditional buckle and pin system in place on this watch where the buckle is composed of brushed steel.
And finally we’ve got the screw down caseback which is brushed in a circular pattern and decorated with the full Breitling logo. And of course we have the usual watch reference details on there, along with the water resistance rating of 500 M.
And there we have it guys, That is the E commerce exclusive Breitling SuperOcean A17366.
